When to Complete an RV Repair at Home

Sometimes your RV needs a small repair and you may find yourself thinking, “can I do this myself?” In many scenarios, it’s entirely possible to complete a repair at home! In fact, RV maintenance can be a lot easier when you can take on some of the projects yourself. Our team at Meridian RV is here to help guide you through the repair process and help you decide if the project can be completed at home.

How to Start

Before you dive into a project, there are a few things you should do first. To start with, you’ll need to identify the problem and determine what actually needs to be repaired. Will it require parts? What products will you need?

From that point, you’ll want to be honest with yourself about your skill level. Some people are more comfortable with handy work than others, and that’s okay! Sometimes it might be less expensive to schedule an RV service visit because you won’t have to commit your time to the project.

If you decide you’re able to tackle the repair, take a look at your toolbox and see if you have all the necessary tools to correctly do the job!

Ordering Parts

Usually when a trailer repair needs to be done, you’ll also need to order parts. If you know exactly what you need, then you can find the part online and have it sent directly to your door. If you need help identifying the parts for the repair, you can visit your local dealership for help ordering the correct piece.

Common Repairs

There are a handful of regular trailer maintenance items that you’ll likely have to address at some point during ownership. For example, the slide out will need to be regularly checked, cleaned, and lubricated.

Other common items include:

  • Appliance repair or replacement
  • Awning repairs
  • Tire care
  • Jack maintenance
  • Oil changes (for motorhomes)
  • Tank care
  • Tightening screws
  • Sealing the roof

Sometimes common repairs can be as simple as cleaning or lubricating a moving part, but other times something that seems common will require a full trailer service.

The biggest part of at-home RV repair is making sure you are confident in safely completing the job. This includes the safety of yourself during the process, but also the safety of traveling with the rig after it has been repaired.
