Holiday travel is made better with an RV. Enjoy your cozy second home rather than a pricey hotel room or a relative’s cramped guest bedroom. Get easy access to a kitchen no matter how remote you go. Skip the hassle of coordinating cheap red eye flights and make the journey a stress-free road trip. There are plenty of perks to RV traveling during the holidays!
If you plan on hitting the road this holiday season, use the following strategies to make the experience ever better. Pick The Destination
The first step is deciding where you want to take your RV.
One common holiday destination is a family member’s house. Maybe you visit parents, siblings, cousins, or another relative. Just be sure to coordinate how your RV will get set up at their place. Is there enough room on their property (and does that fit within any local laws)?
If you have several family members who live near each other, you can stop at each person’s home throughout the road trip. Stay at your mom and dad’s one night, the drive over to your aunt and uncle’s the next. This approach allows you to see more family members…without a giant group of people trying to fit inside a small home.
Another common destination for holiday travel is an RV campground. Many RV parks are open for holiday visitors – and some even go the extra length to make the stay special. There may be a big holiday meal, decorations throughout the campground, and even activities for everyone to enjoy. It’s a great way to enjoy nature while still celebrating the holidays.
Decorating Your RV
It’s fun decorating your RV for the holidays. But not all decorations that work in your stationary home will work in your camper. A live Christmas tree, for example, may not fit inside your RV’s small living room.
But you can still spruce up your RV. Hang colored streamers and garlands around windows – maybe even with some ornaments hanging off of them. Switch out your standard pillows and blankets for holiday themed ones. Place lights on the outside of your camper. These are just a few ways to get your camper decorated for the holidays.
Plan Holiday Meals Realistically
Many families have certain dishes that they reserve for the holiday season. These become an important part of the holiday tradition, but they might not always be feasible to create in a small and compact RV kitchen. That’s where a little creativity comes into play.
Maybe instead of a large ham or turkey, you cook a smaller chicken. Maybe instead of ten side dishes, you prepare the top two or three. Be selective about what you plan to make – don’t bite off more than you can chew!
If you are staying with a relative or at a campsite, there may be a full kitchen that you can access. But this could create a “too many cooks in the kitchen” situation if other folks are also wanting to access this space. See if you can reserve a time or simply do without.
