Before You Leave
There are some easy pre-trip maintenance steps you can take to make sure the fridge is ready for your adventure. Doing these now will help you avoid problems down the line, so the additional effort is worth it. Do a quick check of your fridge and look for any clear signs of damage or concern. Listen for any strange noises that you may want to get checked out before you leave.
You should also consider pre-cooling your refrigerator for eight to ten hours before you put any food inside of it. This will ensure that your food won’t fluctuate in temperature. Make sure your food is already at the proper temperature when you load it into the unit.
Post-Trip Defrost
If you plan on leaving your camper in storage for a while after your trip, you’ll want to defrost the fridge as a part of regular maintenance. You don’t want to pay an electricity bill for an appliance you’re not using. You should probably also periodically defrost the unit to help boost performance and extend its life. There are a variety of ways to defrost the fridge. Keep in mind that there will be a lot of water draining from the unit, so you’ll need a way to catch or absorb the liquid.
Safety Tips
There are also some safety issues to keep in mind when you are performing maintenance on your camper’s fridge. If you smell ammonia, there’s a leak. You’ll need to turn off the unit and open it up to air it out. You should also open up the windows and vents to air out the camper completely. Ammonia can not only ruin the fridge, but the fumes can be dangerous too. Make a service appointment to get this fixed!
When performing some mechanical maintenance on your refrigerator, remove all flammable products. Some repairs will need to be done on the roof, so make sure you have a secure ladder and a spotter on the ground.
We hope these tips help you keep your camper’s fridge clean and functioning properly.
