RV Fire Safety Essentials

Safety is always a number one priority for travelers and it’s no different when you travel in an RV. From campfires, electrical systems, and cooking, the risk for a fire is definitely present. However, you can be prepared and protected by having the appropriate tools on hand.

1. Smoke Detectors

If a fire were to start in your RV, you would want to be alerted as soon as possible. Having smoke detectors installed and operable is extremely important. You should make sure to have at least two in your rig and you should frequently check the batteries.

Along with checking the batteries, you should test the detectors occasionally to make sure the volume is loud enough to hear.

2. Fire Extinguishers

Another tool you should have available and know how to use is a fire extinguisher as it will be your first line of defense in case of a fire. Ideally, you should keep a fire extinguisher easily accessible in your kitchen, but you should also have a secondary extinguisher outside. You may even consider having multiple throughout your rig, especially if it’s a larger unit.

3. Safety in the Kitchen

Just like in regular homes, most RV fires start in the kitchen. You should never leave a burner unattended while in use and you should always double-check that it has been completely turned off before leaving.

To reduce the risk of fire, you should keep your kitchen space clean and uncluttered. Leave combustible materials far away from your cooking spaces and always be focused on the task at hand.

4. Safe Electrical Systems

Another common way fires can start in an RV is through damaged electrical systems. When you perform regular cleaning and maintenance, you should also check that all cords and electrical connections are in good condition. You should also understand and monitor the power load of your RV in order to prevent overload.

5. Fire Plan

The last tool that many people overlook is creating and practicing a fire plan. This is especially important if you travel with family. You should map out the escape routes for each room and the potential location of the fire.

You should also discuss a meeting point at every location or campsite so everyone in your party knows where to go if they need to quickly leave the RV.

You should also tell any guests where they can find the fire extinguishers in case of an emergency.
