Factor in Budget

Every RV is an investment, so you want to make sure you’re making the right decision. Start by creating a budget. Don’t forget to include maintenance, insurance, gas, and repairs as a part of your budget.

Travel trailers tend to be the more affordable option since they cost less upfront and have lower upkeep costs. If you’re on a tight budget, a travel trailer may be right for you. Keep in mind that RVs can last for several years if well maintained, so you may find it worthwhile to invest in the larger, more expensive fifth wheel. Fifth wheels cost more but tend to come with more features and space.

Consider the Towing Experience

Both styles of campers are towable models, meaning you need a tow vehicle to transport the rig. Most travelers find that fifth wheels are easier to tow, even though they are larger. Travel trailers usually encounter sway more often. Fifth wheels offer a more stable towing experience thanks to the style of hitch.

Keep in mind that you have to factor in your tow vehicle too. Travel trailers can be transported by a wider range of vehicles including vans, trucks, cars, and more. On the other hand, fifth wheels have to be transported by a truck with a pickup bed because of the style of hitch they utilize.

Decide on Size

One more consideration you need to make is what size rig you want. Travel trailers are more compact and well-suited for solo travelers or small groups. The limited size also means limited space and features. Fifth wheels, on the other hand, offer plenty of interior space since they’re the largest towable RV on the market. You’ll find large living areas, master bedrooms, spacious kitchens, and extra storage.
